Eugene "Gene" A. Schlett, 87, of 2703 Sweetbriar Dr., Sandusky, died on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Stein Hospice Care Center after a brief illness. Gene was known for his interest and accomplishments in aviation. Born the son of William and Josephine (Stoker) Schlett, he was a Sandusky High School graduate and attended Elon College in North Carolina as part of aviation cadet training. Immediately after graduation, he entered the United States Air Force, began his training to become a pilot, and graduated from the Army Air Force as a fighter pilot. Gene was an FAA pilot examiner for over twenty-five years, and during that time he also was a corporate pilot for a local manufacturing company; he also served that company in sales and engineering capacities. He was also the assistant manager of the Sandusky Airport, and a flight instructor for the airport through Island Airlines. In addition to his love for flying, he enjoyed boating. He was a life member of AMVETS, the Elks, Sandusky Yacht Club, Society of Automotive Engineers, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assoc., Quiet Birdmen, Sandusky Orioles and the Sandusky Athletic Club. His daughter and her family, Melissa (T.J.) Grahl, Amanda (Dino) Chavarria, Christian Brady, and Justin Brady, great-grandchildren Braylon Chavarria, Devin Chavarria, and Bailey Reagan Brady, his son and his family, Doug (Cheri) Schlett, Emilee and Sammy Schlett, all of Sandusky, survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Carmelita, and brothers, Rolland and Robert. Friends may call on Wednesday, April 11 from 5-8 p.m. in Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, April 12 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Rev. Gerald Bauer will officiate.
